One of the aims of this blog is to be able to announce new features on SkyandTelescope.com (there are a few things in the works). I'm now finally able to do that.

RSS Feeds

Subscribe to the news you can use.

On many of the pages here (including this one), you'll see a link near the top that says "RSS." If you know what that means, then you probably also know that our RSS feeds were lame. Web Producer David Tytell has been able to turn his attention to them and, as of today, they are much improved. So please go back and have a look.

If you don't know what RSS feeds are, basically they're automatically updated lists of Web pages that you subscribe to, resulting in something akin to a news ticker. You use reader software (such as a Web browser or a stand-alone program) to collect the information the feeds send to you. It's a nice way to know when a new story has been posted to our site. You get the headlines, and then you can go to the site and read the article.

At work, I use the Firefox Web browser to read RSS feeds. At home, I use Apple's Safari browser. I have found that the new Firefox 2.0 handles subscribing to RSS feeds (which use so-called XML files) much better than earlier versions.
