One of the rarest 20th-century astronomy books, A Photographic Atlas of Selected Regions of the Milky Way by legendary astronomer Edward Emerson Barnard, has been reprinted. Astronomy professor Gerald Orin Dobek of Northwestern Michigan College has rearranged the original two-volume atlas into a single book. It begins with a foreword by Dobek, as well as an addendum detailing the reproduction of Barnard’s original prints. The bulk of the new work, which is priced at $125, features each of Barnard’s original 50 black-and-white plates, reordered to blend with matching charts compiled by Barnard and denoting objects listed in his famous catalog of dark nebulae. All of the author’s original text is preserved, with slight editing and corrections. The book closes with a fold-out mosaic of all the plates assembled according to their proper galactic location. Cambridge University Press, 372 pages, ISBN 978-0-521-19143-2.
