Celestron has announced its new EdgeHD series of Schmidt-Cassegrain telescopes (starting at $1,299 for the 8-inch f/10 tube assembly). Billed as aplanatic Schmidt telescopes, this series of 8-, 9¼-, 11-, and 14-inch tube assemblies incorporate a 2-element field flattener and coma corrector in the main light-baffle tube that promises to correct distortions to the edge of the largest CCD detectors on the market. Each EdgeHD telescope uses Celestron’s premium Starbright XLT coatings and is Fastar compatible. Additional features include a new mirror support system that reduces image shift during long-exposure photography, a vented rear cell with 60-micron filter to aid cool-down times, and a 9 × 50 finderscope.
