1st Annual Southwest Night Sky Conference – Taos, NM

September 13, 2007 @ 12:00 am - September 15, 2007 @ 12:00 am

Coming September 2007 – First Annual Southwest Night Sky Conference
Hosted by the Night Sky Program of the New Mexico Heritage Preservation Alliance (Santa Fe) along with co-sponsor The International Dark-Sky Association (Tucson), the conference will be held September 13th-15th at the Taos Convention Center, NM.

This regional conference has been planned for those who value the rich cultural heritage of the southwest, who seek proven methods and resources to protect the dark sky, and who want to be inspired and expand their knowledge of the treasure we have in a pristine night sky. The conference schedule features noted local and national speakers with sessions designed to explore and encourage protection of the timelessness, value and heritage of a dark night sky; a part of our natural world that is rapidly becoming lost to much of the world’s population.

Educational sessions will address topics ranging from cultural heritage of the night sky, storytelling and star lore; night sky tourism; lighting ordinance efforts - how to start one and success stories; and impact of artificial lighting upon wildlife and the natural world. Dark sky preservation and night sky friendly lighting will include LEED criteria and the important allies night sky advocates have in the architect and lighting design communities.

Featured and keynote speakers include: Anna Sofaer, Chaco Canyon "sun dagger" discoverer; Alan Hale, co-discoverer of Comet Hale-Bopp; Robert Gent, President of the International Dark-Sky Association and New Mexico Lieutenant Governor, Diane Denish (invited)

Special events planned during the conference include: 1) a welcome desert reception at the El Monte Sagrado Living Resort & Spa, 2) a star party to commemorate “New Mexico Dark Sky Appreciation Night” with telescope viewing of the sky above Taos, 3) a screening of “The Mystery of Chaco Canyon” directed by Anna Sofaer and narrated by Robert Redford, 4) an afternoon tour of Taos Pueblo and 5) a “Backyard Astronomy” Expo open to conference attendees and the general public.

This inaugural conference hosted by the Night Sky Program of the New Mexico Heritage Preservation Alliance, marks the first time the International Dark-Sky Association has been involved with an event in New Mexico. Comprehensive programming seeks to weave together the interests of local officials, community leaders and night sky advocates, lighting designers, architects and electrical trades, preservationists and aficionados of the starry night and professional and amateur astronomers.
