Beginning Astronomy Camp for Teens

June 3, 2011 @ 12:00 am - June 9, 2011 @ 12:00 am

Now in their 24th year of operation, Astronomy Camps are weeklong adventures in “DOING” science using astronomy as a teaching and discovery tool. Students become astronomers operating large telescopes (20, 60, & 61 inch diameters), keeping nighttime hours, interacting with leading scientists, and interpreting their own observations. The Camps are held in the unique mountain environment of Mt. Lemmon Observatory (9200 feet) north of Tucson. Students are able to observe, record, and monitor a wide range of celestial objects and learn first-hand about astronomy, physics, mathematics, and engineering. Daytime activities hands-on projects involving science and engineering as well as talks on modern astronomical topics and space art, field trips, group research projects, etc. Career opportunities are modeled and discussed by University faculty and by both undergraduate and graduate student counselors. No prior knowledge of astronomy is necessary. Partial need-based scholarships are available.
