Equinox Stargazing at Bellingham Campsite
March 17 @ 4:00 pm - March 19 @ 12:00 pmFree
Join us for a weekend of stargazing. This campsite is within the newest and largest Gold Tier dark sky park in Europe and has ‘Dark Sky Stay & Gaze’ and ‘Dark Sky Friendly’ awards from Northumberland Tourism for their efforts to reduce light pollution to a minimum and create the best conditions for observing the night sky.
The March equinox occurs on March the 20th so the weekend will mark nearly equal amounts of day and night, this is also the first day of spring (vernal equinox) in the Northern Hemisphere and the first day of fall (autumnal equinox) in the Southern Hemisphere.
Campers will be asked to limit exterior lighting on their units and block escape of light from their vans, so that all can make the most of the dark skies. The best way to achieve this is by covering lights with red acetate film, or simply switching them off! Torches must be red light also.
The weekend will comprise talks given by the Starmakers Stargazing Events team - talks will be followed by night sky observing with the help of the experts and their telescopes, with hot drinks and a log-burning stove available in our Wansbeck House facility for warming-up breaks! The weekend is timed with New Moon to avoidthe light pollution from the Moon on these dates - therefore an even darker sky!
Prices to stay for the Star Camp will remain at ‘low season’ camping rates with an additional charge of £8.00 to attend 1 night or £12 for both nights (additional prices are PER PITCH not per person). Refunds are not possible if the evening is overcast, since the experts will still be on site and will impart their knowledge and we cannot direct the weather as much as we may wish to.
It is estimated that 85% of the UK population have never seen a truly dark sky.
