7th Annual Iowa Star PartyThursday, August 20 – Sunday, August 23, 2009

Join us Saturday evening for guest speaker Dr. Elwynn Taylor* presenting, “Standing Between Us and the Stars: A Thin Layer of Air.” Taylor will show us sunset in a bottle and will cover a number of topics including:

How global warming works

Do red sunsets cause hot summers?

Sunspots from Galileo until now

How we measure the atmospheric components such as dust and gases and why satellites have advantages over ground based telescopes.

*Background: Dr. Elwynn Taylor received his doctorate in Biology from Washington University in St. Louis and is currently the ISU Extension Climatologist. Prior to his position at ISU, he served six years as a Meterologist with the National Weather Service and three years as an Atmospheric Physicist for the Department of Defense. He served as an official ambassador to the public for NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL). Taylor is internationally recognized by scholars for his expertise in the interactions of the biological and physical environment.
