Journey to Mars: Lecture at Montauk Observatory

October 15, 2016 @ 7:30 pm - 9:00 pm

Free

TITLE: My Journey to Mars: The Evolution of a Dream

SPEAKER: Tony Pirera, President, Spectrum Thin Films

The dream of a 10 year old boy enthralled by the sights through his first telescope led to a wildly successful reality. You could say a part of that Long Island native ended up on Mars. By the age of 12, Tony Pirera was building his own telescopes, in fact, in high school, he built one of the largest amateur telescopes. His passion for astronomy never let up. In 1993, Tony started the Hauppauge-based company, Spectrum Thin Films, a high tech optics laboratory that specializes in manufacturing optical coatings for astronomical observatories throughout the world. It could be said that Tony made it to Mars when, on May 25, 2008, NASA's Phoenix Mars Lander touched down on that planet's surface carrying sensitive, specially
coated lenses that Tony designed and manufactured. Tony Pirera, founder of Spectrum Thin Films and Board member of the Astronomical Society of Long Island, will discuss his journey from dream to Mars.
