For the 27 years, amateur astronomers and their families from all over the world have gathered each year at Indian Trail Spring to enjoy the warm and friendly atmosphere, dark skies, low humidity and wonderful views of the night sky. Located 35 miles east of Prineville, Oregon in the Ochoco National Forest, Oregon Star Party (OSP) is one of the three darkest and largest star parties in the United States. Attendees bring all sorts of telescopes, from small refractors to large 40 inch Dobsonian reflectors to scan the night sky for star clusters, galaxies, nebulae, and the planets. Don’t have a telescope but still want to join the fun? That’s not a problem: many people are happy to share their view of the night sky.
Indian Trail Spring is a desert plateau, at an elevation of over 5,000 feet and with an unobstructed 360 degree horizon. Camping is basic; attendees must come prepared to be self-sufficient. Families camp in anything from their own vehicles or tents, to RVs. However, the star party is not completely without amenities! OSP provides portable restrooms; a shower truck; a chuck wagon; and an espresso bar. Other vendors are available on site, selling astronomy-related wares. OSP daily events features activities for all ages: speakers whose talks range from astrophotography to solar viewing; an active youth and adult mentor program that provides guidance on using equipment and understanding the night sky; the ever-popular telescope walkabout; and observing lists to suit different levels of ability.
The most important part about OSP is that people attend for the outstanding night skies, learn something through our activities, and the delight in sharing a hobby with friends.
