Twin Lakes Star Party 2009

October 10, 2009 @ 12:00 am - October 18, 2009 @ 12:00 am

The 20th Annual Twin Lakes Star Party 2009 is hosted by the West Kentucky Amateur Astronomers and is held each year at Pennyrile Forest State Park near Dawson Springs, Kentucky. This is a prime dark sky location with broad horizons near a pristine Kentucky wilderness area. We invite you to come join us for a week of observing fun.
Dates are October 10-18, 2009. There is basic camping on-site, with porta-toilets on the field (NO ELECTRICITY) or you can reserve a room or lake cabin at the Park Lodge 1.5 miles away. There is also a developed campground run by PFSP as an alternative to camping on the field. A shower house is available within the campgrounds for a small fee if you are camping on the observing field. The lodge also has a Wi-Fi hotspot.

Pennyrile is a small state park with an 18-hole golf course, hiking, and a lake for swimming and canoeing. Dining facilities are open in the Park Lodge for meals. Other restaurants with local flavor are available in Dawson Springs (8 miles) and Hopkinsville (20 miles). The observing field is located in a remote southern part of the park, away from development and provides a wide dark horizon.

Registration costs are $40/person or $50/family. T-shirts will be available at a cost of $20/shirt. Take a look at the new Star Party T shirt design (will be posted soon). We will also be furnishing a free catered meal again this year on Saturday, Oct. 4th. for preregistrants only, late registrants are welcome if there is extra food.

While Visitors are certainly welcome (and encouraged to read the 'Rules of the Observing Field'), this is a paid event which targets more serious observing.

Are you coming to the TLSP as a participant or spouse of a participant? Do you knit, scrapbook, quilt, do needlework, or some other craft? If so, bring your latest project to the star party. We will have an area set aside in the building to pursue our hobbies and socialize.

The area is more remote than in past years. The sky darker, and the horizon broader. We would also like to reiterate that there is a NO SMOKING policy enforced on the observing field. There will be a designated smoking area just off the field in the graveled area.

One of the big hits of the Star Party is the door prizes. We will list the prizes on our website as we receive them, so please check the site occasionally. WKAA members are not eligible for these prizes. There are always informal talks, and visits to nearby club members’ observatories by request (both John McCubbin and Ross Workman have observatories within a few miles of the observing field). The WKAA membership has amateurs who are accomplished scope builders, CCD astronomers, and deep sky observers.

In the event of less-than-desirable weather, we plan on showing wide-screen movies and documentaries during the evening.

We invite you to enjoy a week of observing and astronomy with us. So grab your scope, let us know you are coming, and we'll see you on the field.
