UACNJ Annual Symposium

September 24, 2010 @ 12:00 am - September 26, 2010 @ 12:00 am

New Jersey Holds the Secrets of the Universe.Few people associate New Jersey with Astronomy. Huge telescopes mounted high atop pristine mountains in the Southwest and Hawaii come to mind. But, New Jersey holds one of the premier viewing sites east of the Mississippi. Sixteen telescopes owned by a consortium of local astronomy clubs peer out at the universe eleven hundred feet above the New Jersey countryside.
The UACNJ Observatory at Jenny Jump is located atop a mountain in Jenny Jump State Forest, near Hope, New Jersey, in Warren County. The site is one of the few dark sky locations left in the state.
The facility has a 16-inch Newtonian telescope in its Greenwood Observatory and maintains an education center with a 55-seat lecture room, gift shop and a modest New Jersey astronomy museum. A research library, sleeping accommodations, meeting room, full bath and kitchen facilities are available for observers.
The United Astronomy Clubs of New Jersey, Inc. (UACNJ) was formed in 1988 as a loosely associated umbrella networking group for New Jersey area’s 12 amateur astronomy clubs. The UACNJ itself is not a club, but a consortium of a dozen and a half clubs, united to better help support, coordinate, and communicate ideas between the over 1400 individuals who make astronomy their hobby, in and around the state.
This year UACNJ will hold its annual symposium at Centenary College and the observatory. Centenary College, located in Hackettstown, NJ is known for its contemporary academic programs and its technology innovations. It is recognized for its community service initiatives, educational, and cultural resource for northwest New Jersey.
From one of the darkest skies in New Jersey comes a chance for the public to mingle with astronomers, enjoy telescope observation, and listen to educational lectures on astronomy from noted experts.
The three-day event is held September 24-26, 2010. Observing sessions and hands-on practical experiences are offered each night at the mountaintop location starting Friday at 7:00pm. Learn the basics of using a telescope or binoculars to find the beautiful objects the night sky has to offer. Experts will be available to answer your questions. Bring your used equipment to sell or exchange at the swap table.
Educational topics will be presented hourly from 1:00pm to 5:00pm on Saturday and Sunday at the college. Topics include The Sun, New Discoveries in Astronomy, Life in the Universe, Asteroids Impacting the Earth and more. Topics are suitable for all ages and experience levels.

The cost for the event is $35, $25 for early registration if paid by September 9th, 2010.
