This is one of the most beautiful regions of the Milky Way. Visible in the binoculars and small telescopes both these objects were cataloged by Messier. Summer's showcase is nevertheless always quite low in our 40-some-degree latitudes. I was fortunate enough to be in rural Pennsylvania to take this shot. Exposure time - 75 min.

Equipment

Olympus C-750 UZ digital camera, with a FLD filter, and a polarizing filter. Exposure time: 1/1000 second, at f/8.0 ISO 50.

Description

I went out and decided I'd try zooming in closer while the Sun was setting for a closer and better view with higher resolution and detail, I made sure to set the aperture as small as possible, and used the FLD and polarizing filters to bring out more detail and reduce brightness. I also used a noise reduction setting on the camera.

Description

The Eastern Veil is the brightest component of the Veil Complex and contains several sections. Although relatively faint, the Veil Complex can be resolved at a dark site with a large aperture telescope enhanced with an OIII filter. The HaRGB image is 4 hours of exposure using narrowband filters in light polluted skies. The Hubble palette which maps SII to Red, Ha to Green, and OIII to blue was used to produce the vivid colors.
