Description

Barnard's Loop (Sharpless 2-276) is an emission nebula in the constellation of Orion. It is part of a giant molecular cloud which also contains the bright Horsehead and Orion nebulae. The stars within the Orion Nebula are believed to be responsible for ionizing the loop. Description

Conjunction of Venus, Moon, Jupiter and Mercury. These four objects are aligning themselves for a nice conjunction on December 31 with the moon next to Venus and Jupiter next to Mercury. This image shows how they are getting ready for that two days before the event.

This is an exposure of 10.5 hours total which reveals the rich nebula around M45. It remind us that our space isn't empty and dark, but full of gas and dust.

The Moon, Jupiter and Venus were shot through a Celestron Onyx 80 mm refractor on 12/1/08 at 7:30 PM MT from Alamogordo, NM. Two composite images (Moon at 1/125 sec, Jupiter and Venus at 1/3 sec).

Description

It was one of the most spectacular conjunctions I've ever seen. The beautiful sky colors at dusk, passage of wandering clouds and the great planetary show, made really an attractive night for us.
