Description

I made my first trip to Cherry Springs State Park, PA in April and found this dark sky preserve absolutely beautiful. It was an extreme privilege, and great pleasure to view the night sky there. The Milky Way glows brightly across the sky In this photo. A scene not many people get to see, especially in the north east due to the abundant light pollution. I loved watching it rise over the tree tops and seeing it stretch across the sky. I like how it seems to be shining out from the opening in the tree line. Stars and nebula spill out across the sky from below the horizon flowing through this magical opening!

The images were taken with a Canon 7D mounted at the prime focus point of a TMB9L refractor on an Astrotrac Travel Pier. ISO 400, 1/4000s for the Moon and 1/6400s for the Sun (filtered, of course, with a homemade Baader film filter). The levels were gently adjusted in Photoshop and the Sun's image was colourized (I'm not fond of the Baader blue).

Description

I took an image of the "SuperMoon" on Saturday night and then a few test shots of the Sun the next day. I thought I would compare the relative apparent angular sizes of the two, with a very large perigee moon that will turn into a very small apogee moon in two weeks during the annular eclipse. The contrast shows the ellipticity of the Moon's orbit - a Moon which is "larger" than the Sun at one extreme of its orbit, and "smaller" than the Sun at the other, two weeks later. I have higher resolution images if needed.

Camera: Nikon D40 on fixed tripod Exposures: Trees & Sky = .62sec at ISO400 @ f/6.3; Moon = 1/80sec at ISO400 @ f/6.3 Lens: Trees & Sky = Nikkor 18-55mm @ 38mm; Moon = Nikkor 70-200mm @ 200mm

Description

On May 5, 2012, when this image was taken, the Moon was near perigee (its closest approach to Earth). Because of this, it appeared brighter and larger than it will any other time this year giving it the designation of a super Moon. This is a composite image...one shot was taken for the trees and sky and another shot for the moon, then the two were merged together for the final result.

Description

The temple of Poseidon was constructed in 444-440 BC, over the ruins of a temple dating from the Archaic Period. It is perched above the sea at a height of almost 60 m. The design of the temple is a typical hexastyle. Only some columns of the Sounion temple stand today, but intact it would have closely resembled the contemporary and well-preserved Temple of Hephaestus beneath the Acropolis, which may have been designed by the same architect.
