PhotographerScott LundquistLocationPennington, NJDate3/21/13 7:16PMEquipmentCanon EOS Rebel T3i with Canon EF S55-250mm lens, tripod mounted 15sec unguided exposure (ISO 400)DescriptionAfter four unsuccessful tries to locate it visually with binoculars (vs Philadelphia's skyglow), I finally captured this image of Comet PanSTARRS (to left of the satellite trail) from central New Jersey. Every comet is interesting, but hopefully this is a warmup to Comet ISON! |

PhotographerVictor C. RogusLocationJadwin, MissouriDate03/20/2013 20:20:52EquipmentToday's photographs were made in Jadwin, Missouri with a 5 inch apochromatic refracting telescope at f9 on a Losmandy G-8 mount, a Cannon 60Da camera was used for an exposure of 5 seconds at an ISO of 2000.DescriptionThese are a couple of images I made of Comet, Pan-STARRS on March 20, 2013. As I look over my collection of images starting with March 11 until now I see nightly changes in the Comet, the direction of the tail comes to mind first, always away from the Sun. Changes in color, at times, and also changes in the size of the coma. Poor weather is predicted for the next several days, so no more pictures, for a while. But I think an interesting exhibit or article might be on how Comet Pan-STARRS evolved in shape, size and color as it was seen from Earth by millions of us Humans around the world. |

PhotographerRick FienbergLocationBelmont, MA, USADate2013 March 20, 8 p.m. EDTEquipmentCanon 20Da and 200-mm lens. Stack of a dozen 1.6-sec exposures at f/4.5 and ISO 3200, processed with Nebulosity and Photoshop.DescriptionIt wasn't easy finding a spot near my home with a clear western horizon, but I did manage to find one on a hilltop near McLean Hospital in Belmont, MA. I had to set up my tripod in a snowbank, and my feet froze, but I got the shot I was after. This view matches quite closely what I saw in my 15 x 50 image-stabilized binoculars. Not a great comet, but better than nothing! |
