Pentax K-x DSLR at ISO 1600; stack of 80% of 100 images taken at 30s exposure time at prime focus of a Skywatcher ED 120/900 mm refractor on HEQ-5 mount; unguided Image stacked and preprocessed with DeepSkyStacker; fine tuning with Photoshop.

Description

By chance, I took this image of the supernova M51 shortly before the discovery image had been taken. This is one of my first successful attempts in galaxy photography.

Zoom in on the area in M51 where the supernova appeared. The first is a reference photo from 5/10/2011. The other 2 photos are from early morning and later evening on the day of the explosion (5/31/2011).

The Supernova in M51 was discovered May 31, and news was not disseminated when photo was taken.
