Starstruck: The Fine Art of Astrophotography
Last weekend, Bates College in Lewiston, Maine, opened the Starstruck exhibit, featuring the work of nine invited artists and astrophotographers as well as that of 27 others from around the world whose images were selected by the exhibit's jurors. The show is open to the public through December 15, and offers viewers a rare opportunity to experience these truly breathtaking images of the cosmos in large-scale reproductions.
As S&T editors, we're familiar with many of the photographers, but quite a few were new to us. Whether the artists were familiar or brand-new, having the opportunity to view their stunning photographs in a gallery setting gave us a vastly different perspective. For instance, readers may be familiar with Nick Risinger’s Photopic Sky Survey , yet seeing the entire mosaic printed 10-feet wide is a truly awe-inspiring experience. Even displayed at that size, the image still isn't shown at full resolution.
A number of artists featured in the exhibit (including myself and Senior Editor Dennis di Cicco) were able to attend the opening and mingle, answering questions about our inspiration and the widely-differing techniques used in the production of the photographs. If you’re vacationing in Maine this summer, be sure to visit the exhibit!
