Tom Field, the man behind RSpec, talks with S&T senior editor Dennis di Cicco about the growing number of amateur astronomers doing backyard spectroscopy with simple equipment, including webcams, video cameras, DSLRs, and astronomical CCD cameras. Field also demonstrates his RSpec program, which transforms the image of a spectrum (including real-time video images) into a calibrated graph showing spectral features.
