You can view the solar spectrum or split spectroscopic binary stars with Shelyak Instruments Lhires III Spectrograph ($3,295). It's a compact, dual-use instrument capable of delivering high-resolution eyepiece views of the solar spectrum without a telescope. Adding a telescope and camera, however, turns it into a professional-quality research tool able to record spectra of novae, comets, and faint stars. The Lhires III Spectrograph is a Littrow design, and it comes with a 2,400-lines-per-mm grating, standard T-thread adapter, and Schmidt-Cassegrain telescope adapter. A second eyepiece "sees" the field of view around the spectrograph's entrance slit and works with autoguiders for long-exposure imaging. Optional slit modules and lower-resolution gratings are especially useful when targeting faint objects. ,
