Landscapes at Night, What a Delight

The World at Night
Just a sample of the stunning astrophotography collected by The World at Night project.

The world is filled with beautiful places (case in point: the entire BBC TV series Planet Earth). Such spectacular pictures are usually taken during daylight. As of yesterday, however, a website is collecting and showcasing famous sites as seen at night.

The World at Night is being run by Babak Tafreshi, an energetic amateur astronomer from Iran, as part of the Astronomers Without Borders program.

You'll find several photographs by the world-traveling Babak on the site, but it features the work of 16 photographers from 11 countries. There are many other familiar names on the contributor list.

The photographs will eventually become a traveling exhibit, a book, and a DVD to coincide with 2009's International Year of Astronomy.
