Description:

In this image Comet 74P/Smirnova-Chernykh shares the same star field as background Spiral Galaxies M66 and M65. The comet is magnitude 16.5 and the galaxies are both about magnitude 10. The negative insert attempts to show the comet a little better. The insert shows the comet has a very faint tail pointing to the WNW (lower right) from the coma. The comet is moving only 6 arc seconds (0.0016 degrees) per hour across Earth's night sky which allowed averaging 3 ten minute images without showing a streaked comet or streaked stars.
