Description:

This day, September 16, 2016, a day after the Mid-Autumn Festival celebrated by the Chinese in Singapore and elsewhere where the tradition is observed, saw the moon at its fullest. The festival which was observed in Singapore yesterday is believed to be the second most important festival after the Chinese New Year. And on this day, the moon is also believed to be the biggest and fullest. The Chinese believe the full moon to be a symbol of prosperity, happiness, and family reunion. Mooncakes are common and are the traditional Chinese pastries eaten to celebrate the Mid-Autumn Festival. It involves the sharing, receiving, and eating of mooncakes. The full moon during the Mid Autumn Festival is also known as the ‘Harvest Moon’ During the autumn equinox, the moonrise and sunset time are close for several evenings especially during full moons in autumn months. The next autumn equinox is on September 22. Today in Singapore, the moon was the closest and weather permitting will be shining till dawn on September 17. And the penumbral eclipse begins about close to 1 am local Singapore time and expected to last till 5 am in the morning. Would like to share the different shades of the full moon today in Singapore where the lunar corona also appeared briefly. If I managed to capture any of the eclipse photos, will send them later to the Editor. Hope these moon pictures could be featured on your website for the benefit of Astronomy lovers. A Kannan Singapore
