Date/Time of photo:

February 7, 2019, at 0300 local time

Equipment:

106 mm Takahashi refractor and color imaging CCD, 180 sec exposure, tracking on the comet.

Description:

There's a new comet in the neighborhood. Comet C/2018 Y1 Iwamoto, discovered by Japanese astronomer Masayuki Iwamoto in late 2018, will make it's closest approach to Earth, at 28 million miles, on February 12. It should get bright enough over the next few days to be seen through binoculars in front of the constellation Leo the Lion, which is visible late at night at this time of year.
