Description:

NGC 1808 is a barred spiral galaxy (like our own Milky Way) located about 40 million light-years away in the southern constellation Columba. NGC 1808 is undergoing so much star formation that it has been deemed a starburst galaxy. The galaxy is moving away from us at 618 miles per second. The outer spiral arms of the galaxy are warped with respect to the inner arms, evidence that it may have had a tidal interaction with the nearby galaxy NGC 1792. This image is from several year old data obtained remotely from the iTelescope.net Siding Springs Observatory in NSW, Australia, and newly processed with PixInsight 1.8 software.
