Description:

NGC 6946, the Fireworks Galaxy, is a face-on spiral galaxy with a small bright nucleus which straddles the northern constellations Cepheus and Cygnus. Its distance from Earth is about 25.2 million light-years. Discovered by William Herschel on 9 September 1798, NGC 6946 has a diameter of approximately 40,000 light-years, about one-third of the Milky Way's size, and contains roughly half the number of stars. This image was shot last week, remotely from La Jolla, using the iTelescope.net 622 mm reflecting telescope in Auberry, CA, high in the Western Sierra. Image consists of 40 minutes of LRGB exposure (10 minutes each).
