My impression is that this is a very rare solar halo event, at least for this location. I have lived in North Carolina for many years and have never seen anything like this. We noticed it late in the day about an hour before sunset and it remained unchanged until the sun had set. It was only possible to see the halo around the sun well as it became partially obscured by the mountains. I feel privileged to have been able to witness and photograph it.

I can now see why early man probably thought the sun was a god. This beautiful image makes me respect the King of the Day Stars. Thanks for sharing such a beautiful photo. Keep up the good work.
