This shot was snapped from my classroom window with a Fuji Finepix A700 7.0 mp digital camera, hand held and not zoomed.
The photo shows a phenomenon that, in this area, is known as a Sun Pillar. It appeared first just before the sun touched the horizon as a very tall slender beam of pink stretching straight up into the sky. By the time I found my camera and called my students to see it, it was much reduced, thoug still spectacular.
