This compact 70-mm f/6 triplet uses an Ohara FPL53 ED element combined with broadband coatings to achieve high-contrast views free from color fringing. Weighing just 5.6 pounds with a pair of hinged tube rings and a Vixen-style dovetail bar, the SV70T is a perfect grab-and-go telescope for casual observing. Its 2½-inch dual-speed, rack-and-pinion focuser includes both 2- and 1¼-inch eyepiece adapters, and accepts the optional SFFR-70APO focal reducer/field flattener ($295), converting the instrument into an f/4.8 wide-field astrograph.     These are superb scopes still tested by the owner. They are recommended by Gene Cross, a noted optician with a lifetime experience with telescopes. Prices are fairly reasonable for such quality. A real winner.
